Cape Town
Cape Town works best as a base for a wider South African trip rather than a standalone weekend — give it at least four days to cover the city, then add on the Cape Winelands and, if your schedule allows, a few nights on safari in a nearby reserve.
A Bit of History
Cape Town was founded in 1652 as a Dutch East India Company resupply station, making it one of the oldest colonial settlements in sub-Saharan Africa. That early strategic role — controlling the sea route around the Cape — shaped centuries of Dutch and later British rule, along with the forced labor and dispossession of indigenous Khoi communities that came with it.
The city was also a key staging ground of apartheid, including the forced removals from District Six, a multiracial inner-city neighborhood bulldozed in the 1970s. Robben Island, visible from the V&A Waterfront, held Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners for decades and is now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What Makes Cape Town Unique
Cape Town is defined by proximity to extremes most cities never touch even one of: a flat-topped mountain rising straight out of the city center, two oceans meeting nearby at Cape Point, and some of the world's oldest wine estates a 40-minute drive away. Few cities compress this much dramatic geography into a single day's reach.
Things to Do
Table Mountain cableway
Go early to beat both the crowds and the afternoon wind closures.
Robben Island tour
Led by former political prisoners as guides — book several days ahead, as tours sell out.
Cape of Good Hope & Boulders Beach
Penguins at Boulders, dramatic cliffs at the Cape — doable together in one full day.
Bo-Kaap
The colorful, historically Cape Malay neighborhood — go for a cooking class, not just photos.
Stellenbosch or Constantia wine tasting
Constantia is closer to the city; Stellenbosch has more variety and generally lower prices.
District Six Museum
A sobering, essential counterpoint to the city's natural beauty.
How Much Time Should You Spend Here?
1–2 Days
Focus on Table Mountain and the City Bowl/Bo-Kaap — weather-dependent, so keep it flexible.
3–5 Days
Add the Cape Peninsula loop (Boulders Beach, Cape Point) and a Winelands day trip.
1 Week+
Extend into a safari add-on or the Garden Route for a few extra days.
Local Favorites
The food, drinks, and small rituals locals actually build their days around.
A braai
South African barbecue — the social centerpiece of a Cape Town weekend, more ritual than meal.
Bunny chow
A hollowed bread loaf filled with curry — technically a Durban dish, but common everywhere here too.
Rooibos tea
A naturally caffeine-free herbal tea grown almost exclusively in the region.
Sundowners
Drinks timed specifically to watch the sunset, taken very seriously in this city.
Hidden Gem
Silvermine Nature Reserve
A network of hiking trails and a reservoir swim spot on the mountain chain, with sweeping views and a fraction of Table Mountain's crowds.
Things to Avoid
Walking alone at night off the main strips
Stick to well-trafficked areas like the Waterfront or Kloof Street, and ask your accommodation for current local guidance.
Leaving valuables visible in a parked car
This includes at trailheads and scenic viewpoints, not just city streets.
Underestimating the wind
The "Cape Doctor" southeaster can shut down the cableway and boat trips with little notice.
Booking safari add-ons last minute
Nearby reserves fill up fast, especially November through March.
Local Tips & Tricks
Table Mountain, weather permitting
The cableway shuts down in high wind with no warning. Build in a flexible day and check the live webcam before you go.
Stellenbosch over Franschhoek for value
Both wine regions are excellent. Stellenbosch tastings tend to run cheaper with just as much quality.
Book safari add-ons before you land
Reserves within a few hours of Cape Town (like those in the Eastern Cape) fill up fast in peak season.
Recommended Budget by Group Size
Rough totals for a 7-night trip, excluding international flights — actual costs vary by season and travel style.
Couple
$800–$1,400 for 7 nights
Based on a shared mid-range guesthouse room, excluding international flights.
Family of 4
$1,300–$2,300 for 7 nights
Self-catering apartments are common and family-friendly in Cape Town.
Group of 6+
$1,700–$3,000 for 7 nights
A shared villa keeps per-person costs low; add a safari extension separately.
Where to Stay in Cape Town
Our picks across three budgets.
Once in Cape Town
Design-forward hostel in the City Bowl with a rooftop bar and mountain views.
Cape Cadogan
Boutique guesthouse walking distance to Kloof Street's restaurant strip.
Ellerman House
Clifftop estate above Bantry Bay with a private wine cellar and art collection.
Good to Know Before You Go
Safety Snapshot
Cape Town has notably higher rates of violent crime than the other destinations on this list, concentrated heavily outside tourist areas. Visitors who stick to well-trafficked neighborhoods, avoid displaying valuables, and use trusted transport after dark typically have safe visits — check current government travel advisories before you go.
Getting Around
MyCiTi bus rapid transit covers major tourist routes and the airport; Uber and Bolt are the most practical way to get around after dark. Renting a car is popular for the Winelands and Cape Peninsula but requires confidence with left-hand driving.
Plug Type
Type M (and C/N), 230V
Tipping
10–15% at restaurants is standard and expected
Tap Water
Safe to drink in the city, though periodic drought restrictions apply
Visa
Visa-free entry for up to 90 days for many nationalities
