Grand Cayman
Grand Cayman punches above its size for such a small island — Seven Mile Beach alone anchors a genuinely excellent beach vacation, while some of the best wall diving and stingray encounters in the Caribbean are a short boat ride away.
The island runs efficiently and comfortably, a byproduct of its financial-services economy, which makes it an easy, low-friction destination for a first Caribbean trip, if a pricier one than some of its neighbors.
A Bit of History
The Cayman Islands were sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1503 but remained largely unsettled for over a century afterward; permanent settlement grew slowly through the 17th and 18th centuries with pirates, shipwreck survivors, and deserters, before the islands came under British control alongside Jamaica.
When Jamaica gained independence in 1962, the Cayman Islands chose to remain a British Overseas Territory rather than become independent — a decision that, combined with a zero direct-tax policy adopted in the 20th century, transformed the islands into one of the world's major offshore financial centers, which today funds much of Grand Cayman's tourism infrastructure and high standard of living.
What Makes Grand Cayman Unique
Grand Cayman's financial-center wealth quietly subsidizes its tourist experience — the roads, services, and overall polish here read closer to a wealthy small nation than a typical Caribbean beach destination, a direct legacy of the offshore banking industry most visitors never think about while snorkeling with stingrays.
Things to Do
Seven Mile Beach
The island's main beach strip, with calm, clear water and consistently ranked among the Caribbean's best.
Stingray City
A shallow sandbar where you can wade with and hand-feed wild southern stingrays, one of the most distinctive experiences in the Caribbean.
Cayman Turtle Centre
A conservation facility where you can see and, at designated times, handle sea turtles.
Bioluminescent bay night tour
Kayak or boat tours through waters that glow with bioluminescent plankton on moonless nights.
George Town's National Museum
A compact but worthwhile stop on the island's history, from its seafaring roots to its financial rise.
Wall diving at Bloody Bay Marine Park
World-class wall diving off nearby Little Cayman, reachable by a short flight or dive-boat day trip for serious divers.
How Much Time Should You Spend Here?
1–2 Days
Cover Seven Mile Beach and Stingray City.
3–5 Days
Add the Turtle Centre, George Town, and a Rum Point day.
1 Week+
Add Little Cayman or Cayman Brac as a short-flight extension for diving.
Local Favorites
The food, drinks, and small rituals locals actually build their days around.
Cayman-style fish, fried or steamed "in a bag"
Local snapper or grouper prepared simply, a genuine island specialty.
Conch, prepared several ways
Conch fritters, conch salad, and cracked conch are all local staples, best from a no-frills local kitchen.
A rum punch at a beach bar, no resort required
Local beach bars along the West Bay stretch offer the same drink with more character than resort pool bars.
A quiet evening at Rum Point or Cayman Kai
Calmer, more local alternatives to the Seven Mile Beach strip, on the island's north side.
Hidden Gem
Mastic Trail
A two-mile hike through old-growth dry forest across the island's interior — dense, quiet, and a total contrast to the beach-and-resort image most visitors leave with.
Things to Avoid
Touching or chasing the stingrays
Guides provide clear handling instructions at Stingray City — follow them rather than improvising.
Standing on coral while snorkeling or diving
Reef protection is taken seriously across the island's dive sites.
Assuming it's a budget Caribbean destination
Grand Cayman is consistently one of the pricier islands in the region — budget accordingly.
Forgetting the drive-on-the-left rule
A common mix-up for visitors used to right-hand driving, particularly with rental cars.
Local Tips & Tricks
Book Stingray City through a licensed operator
Reputable tour operators brief you thoroughly and prioritize the stingrays' welfare — a quick credential check is worth it.
Consider Rum Point for a quieter beach day
Same excellent water quality as Seven Mile Beach, without the resort density.
Budget for a pricier trip than other Caribbean islands
Grand Cayman's costs generally run higher than nearby destinations — factor that into planning.
Recommended Budget by Group Size
Rough totals for a 7-night trip, excluding international flights — actual costs vary by season and travel style.
Couple
$2,100–$3,900 for 7 nights
Based on a shared mid-range hotel room, excluding international flights — Grand Cayman runs pricier than most Caribbean islands.
Family of 4
$3,600–$6,600 for 7 nights
Condo-style resorts with kitchens are common and help offset the island's high dining costs.
Group of 6+
$4,700–$8,600 for 7 nights
A shared condo brings per-person costs down, though still a premium destination overall.
